Qualifications :
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Institute of Public Enterprises, Osmania University, Hyderabad (1994).
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai (1981).

Battula Venkateswara Rao is a seasoned expert in the renewable energy sector, with over four decades of experience in solar energy financing, project development, and policy implementation.

His extensive career has been dedicated to advancing renewable energy projects in India and internationally, particularly through his leadership roles in Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and various global collaborations.

Mr. Rao played a pivotal role in mobilizing funding from institutions like the World Bank, ADB, KFW, JICA, AFD, and EIB, facilitating the development of solar PV projects, solar parks, biomass energy plants, and small hydro projects across India.

Key strategies :
  • He was a key strategist in coordinating with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to implement government schemes and drive policy changes in the sector.

Currently, he serves as a senior consultant and advisor in the renewable energy sector, leveraging his deep expertise in solar PV financing, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy solutions. His previous tenure at IREDA (1994–2017)saw him rise through key positions, including Director - Technical, Chief General Manager, and General Manager, where he was instrumental in designing and implementing national solar programs, securing international lines of credit, and structuring innovative financial models to drive renewable energy adoption.

Before joining IREDA, he worked as a Senior Consultant at Andhra Pradesh Industrial & Technical Consultancy Organization (APITCO), where he specialized in energy audits, industrial energy conservation, and feasibility studies for renewable energy adoption. His early career began at Best & Crompton Engineering Ltd. and Tata Electric Company, where he gained foundational expertise in solar thermal system design, power plant operations, management and industrial energy.

With a strong academic background, including an M.Tech from IIT Mumbai and an MBA from Osmania University, Mr. Rao combines technical proficiency with financial acumen to develop scalable and commercially viable renewable energy solutions. His contributions to policy formulation, financing models, and clean energy expansion have positioned him as a leading authority in India's renewable energy landscape.
